A year into our community engagement work, we’ve made plenty of mistakes — and learned a few things worth sharing.
First, showing up matters more than showing off. The programmes that landed best weren’t the ones with the biggest budgets, but the ones where our team kept returning to the same communities, building trust over time. Second, young people know when they’re being spoken at rather than spoken with — and they disengage fast when that happens.
Third, partnerships with local schools and community leaders open doors that no amount of outside credibility can. Fourth, the smallest interventions — a mentoring conversation, a book placed in the right hands — often outlast the flagship events. And fifth, none of this works without patience; values realignment isn’t a one-term project, it’s a decade-long one. We’re only getting started, and we’re grateful for everyone who has walked this first year with us.
