Why We Believe Reading Builds Character, Not Just Vocabulary

When people hear “reading competition,” they usually picture spelling bees and vocabulary drills. Ours look a little different.

At our last competition, the standout entry wasn’t the student with the widest vocabulary — it was a fifteen-year-old who chose to read and discuss a book about a character who has to choose between loyalty to a friend and telling the truth. Her presentation wasn’t polished, but it was honest, and she clearly hadn’t just read the book — she’d argued with it.

That’s the culture we’re trying to build. Comprehension matters, but so does the habit of sitting with a hard idea long enough to actually think about it. We believe a generation of critical readers is also, eventually, a generation less easily misled — and that feels worth investing in.
